History at The Meadows
History helps us to understand how people and places change over time, and to better understand our place in the world.
Let's discover together...
Learning about the past is the starting point for our learning in the autumn term, as history leads the way in our 'Discover' theme. Children learn about key events in Britain's history, and significant turning points and changes in other nations.
By developing a sense of chronology, links are made between key areas of learning and displayed on our timeline so that children can make connections between them. They learn to work with sources, ask and answer questions, consider points of view and find that our knowledge about the past can help us to understand our world better.
Although the timelines below are topic-specific, a central timeline on display helps children to make links between periods studied so that a fuller understanding of history is developed.
Authentic Outcome - Autumn 2023
Discover Term Y 5-6 - Do all people share a history?
Our learning each term culminates in an Authentic Outcome, where children have an opportunity to share their learning for a real purpose with a critical audience. We held a Tudor exhibition and welcomed guests from the University of Lincoln history department to join us. They gave us feedback on our presentation. We are very proud of our work!
Our Curriculum Plans
Geography at The Meadows
Geography helps us to understand and appreciate the amazing world we live in.
Let's explore together...
Geography leads our learning through the spring, which is our 'explore' term. Children develop an understanding of some of the features of the physical and human features of our islands, and then they compare them in more detail with locations in Europe and North and South America. They learn to identify the wider world by using a range of maps and reference materials. Much of our learning is focused around developing an understanding of our place in the world, and fostering a sense of responsibility for our planet. In other terms, geography is taught alongside other curriculum subjects.
Around the world in tasty ways!
As part of our 'Explore' term in Spring 2022, we enjoyed a special day learning about the cultures of different countries around the world. We sampled traditional foods and learned new words in other languages. This has helped us to increase our knowledge about places.
