Reading at The Meadows

At The Meadows, we aim to inspire a love of reading in all children and work hard to help them to develop their skills and confidence. We have planned our reading curriculum with this in mind, and our suggested reading lists for each year group can be accessed via the links below.

You may find the following website useful. It contains many practical and useful materials and resources, including suggestions of suitable books for specific age groups:

Reading Together

We love reading at The Meadows and we are all working hard to become more fluent and confident. We have many initiatives in place throughout the school, including reading breakfasts, story sack project, fluency groups, individual reading time and interactive displays to inspire us! All classrooms have inviting reading areas where children can spend time with their favourite books. Our recommended book lists can be found on the curriculum section of our website if you would like more inspiration!

Family Learning

We have enjoyed welcoming families in to school to learn together in our year groups. With a focus on developing confidence and fluency in reading, parents and carers have had the opportunity to join their child for a series of shared sessions, led by Mrs Oliver, our reading curriculum leader at The Meadows.

Karin Littlewood - Visiting Illustrator and Author

We were privileged to meet Karin Littlewood, illustrator and author of several well-known children's picture books, including 'Immi' and 'Star Girl.'  We were able to hear Karin tell one of her best-known stories, and she showed us how she goes through the process of imagining, creating and writing a story. We had the chance to work alongside her and she inspired us to create some stories of our own. You can see some of her work by visiting www.karinlittlewood.com.

Our Environment

There are many spaces in which to enjoy reading at The Meadows. Reading is a key to learning. We use a reading spine throughout school to ensure that all children gain access to a wide range of texts and authors. Our recommended reading lists for each year group can also be found in the curriculum section of our website. Throughout the year, we look forward to welcoming families to our reading breakfasts and workshops, which are all planned to support children's reading development.

Monster Phonics

Learning to read is the key to unlocking the wider curriculum, and the foundation for life-long learning. We use Monster Phonics, a whole-class, systematic syntetic phonics programme. This approach ensures that children are introduced to new sounds in a systematic and enjoyable way. You can read more about the teaching of phonics in the 'Curriculum and Assessment' section, and also in 'Classes and Learning - Key Stage One.' The Monster Phonics button on the left will also provide you with further information.

Phonics Workshop

We recently held a phonics workshop for parents and carers of Reception children. During this event, we presented an overview of our synthetic phonics programme and children enjoyed taking part in reading activities! Please find the presentation slides below and do not hesitate to contact us at school if you have any questions.

World Book Day

We enjoy celebrating World Book Day by introducing children to new stories and reading aloud together! Parents and carers join us to read stories to children, and staff read their favourite books to classes; children also sign up to choose which story they would like to listen to most of all. We often start the day with a Reading Breakfast in the hall!

Don't forget that in our 'Curriculum and Learning' section, you can find information about our reading spine, recommended reading lists and phonics workshop information. Our aim is for all children to become confident, fluent readers!
