Family Learning

The aim of family learning sessions is to develop confidence and for home and school to work together to support children's learning. Further information will be shared via Parent Mail when your child's year group session is available to book.

Family Learning - Science

Our family learning programme during the autumn and spring term focused on science. Parents were invited to take part in a short session focusing on the curriculum with our science lead teachers, and then children joined us to complete some exciting activities together!

Family Learning - Maths

We are enjoying working together! This year, families are joining us to find out more about the teaching of number concepts. They have worked with the maths leader and then completed challenges with their children.

Family Learning: Reading

With a focus on developing confidence and fluency in reading, parents and carers had the opportunity to join their child for a series of shared sessions.

Using the principles of Talk for Reading, parents and children read, discuss and investigate a specific story, and focus on a new strategy or technique each week. We learn how to:

  • make predictions
  • retrieve information
  • make inferences
  • develop our imaginations.

We also learn a range of new vocabulary.

Texts we have studied together

Reception: Luna Loves Art by Joseph Coelho

Year 1: There's a Tiger in the Garden by Lizzy Stewart

Year 2: Once Upon a Dragon's Fire by Beatrice Blue

Years 3 and 4: Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd Stanton

Year 5: How to Live Forever by Colin Thompson

Learning Together

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for school and home to work together. These may include:

  • Sharing of Learning events
  • Workshops, where there are opportunities to learn more about teaching strategies in English and Maths
  • Maths and Reading Breakfasts at the start of the school day
  • Friends of the Meadows parent group events and activities
  • Fundraising events.

Below, you will find some examples of these opportunities, and information about home/school links that may be useful to you.

Parents' Consultation Evenings

Parents are given the opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher in the autumn term to talk about how they have settled into the new school year and address any highlighted needs. In the spring term a more formal open evening is held to discuss progress. Formal reports are written during the summer term and there is an opportunity to make an appointment with the class teacher if you wish to discuss these further.

There will be other occasions when parents wish to contact the class teacher and head teacher. This is encouraged at every opportunity, but because The Meadows is a very busy and active school, it is sensible to make an appointment. We will, of course, see you as soon as possible.

Maths Challenges

Working together as families, we have enjoyed some fun experiences in practising our mathematical skills!

Fun with Phonics

Having fun with sounds helps us to become more confident in speaking and reading. We hold regular workshops to support our children's development in reading.

Sharing Events

After each 'Big Picture' learning theme, the children have an opportunity to share their experiences with an audience. Painting with Parents was a great success!

Working Together

Access to School Records

The school provides parents with a written report of progress at the end of each academic year. Parents will be given the opportunity to consult with the class teacher about any concerns regarding the report. All parents are entitled to access to their child’s educational record, including ongoing assessment data held by their class teacher. These are discussed at consultation evenings.
